I was more than a little intrigued when I first heard about HerCut, a line of styling products targeted to hair styles not hair types.
It turns out the line's supporting shampoos and conditioners actually are formulated for hair types. My magic combination came in the form of the brand's normal-dry shampoo and medium conditioner.
The shampoo produced a thick, rich lather that cleaned my hair well but left some moisture in my hair. This is a good thing because my hair tends to be dry.
The conditioner was runnier, but it turned out to be creamy enough to smooth my hair without being too heavy. Both products have a clean, fresh smell that is not too flowery or overpowering.
Overall, I would rate the shampoo and conditioner both as sixes on a scale of one to 10. I can't give them higher scores because at $22 and $28 I expect the product to come with a masseuse.
I have to admit, I was more reluctant to try the line's styling product, which they call a catalyst. There are five types -- The Bob, The Pixie, The Shag, The Blunt Cut and Long Layers. Given that I've had different variations on a bob since I was in the seventh grade, my choice seemed obvious.
The bottle caught my attention immediately. It's one of those very trendy types of packages that houses two different liquids and blends them only when pumped. These combo packs are hot now for everything from eye cream to carpet stain remover. I initially dismissed the product as a gimmick and opted for my usual hair routine.
I used the catalyst only as my due date for this review became inescapable. I'm right at the point when I need to call my hair stylist and schedule a trim, so I figured not even something called a "catalyst" could help me.
I was wrong. HerCut's Bob Catalyst is a spectacular blend of smoothing, straightening and hold -- just what us women with bobs crave. I still had plenty of body at the roots of my hair, but I didn't suffer from my much-dreaded errant waves.
I rate the catalyst a nine out of 10. It's $28; however, it does accomplish what before took me two or three products. Also, my chin-length hair required only two pumps of the product. Here's where I should issue a warning: Use the catalyst sparingly, it's powerful. I can easily imagine how too much could make hair sticky and all-around uncooperative. When used correctly, however, the product gave my bob a smooth, finished look, and I'm able to put off calling my stylist for a trim.
